2020 will be remembered for the Cornavirus pandemic that thrust not just the bowling fraternity but the whole world into turmoil.
Here at Bradwell we suddenly found all of our fixtures, friendlies, leagues and competitions cancelled, leaving us with no visiting teams and no source of income.
Below is a brief resume of the highs and lows, and how with everyone's input the season was rescued.
The immediate future looked bleak. The country in lockdown, all our matches cancelled, no income over the bar and what to do about membership renewals, which rejuvenate our funds each year?
An offer was made to members, a half price subscription in the hope that some bowling might be possible later in the season if restrictions were eased. This offer was taken on board and in fact many members paid
Well, restrictions did ease, and with social distancing, sanitizing and disinfection in place, and with Pauline overseeing the booking of rinks....we opened!
As restrictions eased even more and following Bowls England guidelines, Dave organised singles and pairs knockout competitions and John formulated singles and pairs leagues. These were to prove outstanding successes with almost 100% participat
The knockouts and leagues got under way in mid July amid great enthusiasm, and ran until early September.
This was tempered however, when on August 13th our dear friend Mark Concannon succumbed to his cancer.
Mark was an active member until just months before his death and his big smile and constant chatter will be sorely missed on the green.
We tentatively decided to run the Tom Rush Aussie Pairs. We needn't have worried, we were over subscribed!
The bar was open and the till ringing...
This year's winners were Chris and Fred, and Nina Rush was on hand to present the trophy (the photo shows President Pauline getting in on the act!).
The internal comps continued and members began organising roll-ups. News came through that Sports England had approved our grant application and the committee breathed a little easier.
Plans were put in place for a Presidential Picnic as a season finale. Members were encouraged to wear the brightest and most colourful attire they could find.
The leagues finished in early Sept. Paul & Dave Forsey won
